The Highway and Sanitation Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of Village Streets and Properties, Snow and Ice Removal on Public Property and Garbage Collection.

The Department is also responsible for the maintenance of:

Village Parks
The Ted Stroble building containing the Senior’s Center and Justice Court
Village owned parking lots
The Care and repair of all village vehicles
Picking up leaves and brush that residents put out by the curb as per Village Code

The Village of Monticello Highway Department strives to keep Village roads safe and clean. Hours of operation are 7am until 3 pm Monday thru Friday. We are also on call 24/7 for any inclement weather and road conditions that may affect traffic.

The Village of Monticello Sanitation Department has three garbage collection routes that pick up all residential and commercial garbage within the village from 4am until 12 pm Monday thru Friday. In the summer we have a fourth run and we go to a 6 day a week pickup

Residential garbage must be in in cans not larger than 45 gallons. Cans must have tight fitting lids and not be placed curbside before 5PM the night before collection, nor later than 5 am on day of pickup. Cans must be removed from curbside no later than 9PM on day of collection and stored out of public view. Dumpsters must be no larger than 2 yards with a 78 inch rear load turion bar. Guide to Sanitation & Snow Removal

Do I have to use a garbage container, why can’t I just use a garbage bag?

Garbage containers must be used to prevent animals getting at the garbage and the trash being blow into the street and adjacent properties. Containers must have tight fitting lids both to prevent animals from getting at the garbage and to prevent water from wetting the garbage which increases its weight, costing additional tipping fees at the landfill.

What happens if I put garbage out in bags on the street?

Garbage placed on the street or on top of garbage cans are picked up and the property owner is billed an extra pickup charge as set forth in the Village Fee Schedule

Who is responsible for the sidewalk in front of my property?

The property owner is responsible for repairs and maintenance of the sidewalk in front of his property.

Who is responsible to remove snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of my house?

Snow and ice must be removed by the owner within five hours, or within one hour if directed any official, police officer or representative of the Village. In addition sidewalks must be maintained free from snow and ice, from 8:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. each day except Sunday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sundays. What happens if I fail to remove snow and ice from my sidewalk?

In this case the snow or ice is removed by the Village and the cost for removal is charged to the owner of the property.

What do we do with the leaves?

Leaves are bagged in the spring and placed at the curb in the fall.

Do we pick up brush?

Brush has to be cut into 4 foot lengths and stacked and bundled neatly.

Do we pickup metal?

Metal is picked up all year round just call when its out.

When do we have “free dumping”?

Spring cleanup generally in May and a Fall clean up in October.

Do we supply “roll off’ dumpsters or dumpsters or cans?

No we do not.

Do we pick up grass?

Yes if it is bagged.

When is there no parking on village streets?

Parking is prohibited on Village streets from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM, November 15 to April 1 for the snow plows to be able to properly clear the road.

Can we just dig in the road?

You must get an excavation permit before digging in any Village roadway.

How am I charged for Sanitation usage?

Sanitation rates are set by the Fee Schedule in the Village Code.

Why am I charged for Sanitation if I have no garbage?

Once you tum your water meter on by Village Code you are required to pay for sanitation from the day the meter is turned on.
