Parks & Recreation Areas

The Village of Monticello is rich in opportunities for outdoor recreation.  The Village manages two parks, there are also parks managed by the Town of Thompson located a short distance from the Village. In addition, close by are exceptional outdoor spaces within the Catskills region. Read on to take a closer look at parks and open spaces in and around the Village.

DeHoyos Park

Location: 37 Hay Street   41.655066  -74.70292

DeHoyos Memorial Park and Pond is a beautiful open space located on Hay Street at the west end of the Village. The main recreation area is 11.5 acres and features a children’s playground, splash pad, tennis courts, barbeque picnic area, pavilion and a 2 acre pond stocked with fish, frogs and turtles. Fishing is permitted, sorry no boats.

Dillon Park

Location: 168 Dillon Road, Monticello, 41.65363  -74.70817

Dillion Park is a 13.5 acre park owned and operated by the Village located in the Town of Thompson on the south side of Dillion Road. The park has a 5 acre pond for fishing, a 25’ x 55’ swimming Pool, with restrooms and changing rooms.  The pool is open during July and August from noon to 7: PM with free admission. The park also includes barbeque pits, picnic area, skateboard park, and basketball hoops.

Ted Stroebele Recreation Center

The Ted Stroebele Center serves as the Village’s community center.  It houses the Village court, Meals on Wheels program, Senior Citizens activities and meeting rooms for community groups and non-profit organizations.  The center is located on Jefferson Street between Broadway and North Street, across the street from the Sullivan County Government Center.

Town of Thompson Lake Ida Park

Location: 53 Adams Road in Rock Hill, NY  41.63935 -74.58868  (7 miles from Village)
Amenities: Parking, walking trails, doggy stations

This beautiful park in Rock Hill surrounds a tranquil 12-acre lake and features ample parking and walking trails. Nature abounds in the area: look for fish in the lake, birds in the forest, and much more Catskills wildlife throughout the property

Town of Thompson Neversink River Access

Location: 397 Bridgeville Road in Monticello  41.635549  -74.62121 (3 miles from Village)

The Neversink River Access Park, which opened in spring 2023. As its name implies, this riverside park provides safe portage OUT of the Neversink River along with beautiful views and fishing.  IMPORTANT ALERT: The access point is meant ONLY for removing boats that have already been on the Neversink River. DO NOT put your boats in at this area, as there is no safe portage point downstream for you to get out of the river. 

Town of Thompson East Mongaup River Park  

Location: 181 Town Park Road, Monticello, NY  41.72151  -74.70778 (5 miles from Village)

A 173-acre open space located in Monticello.  Marked Hiking trails including a riverside walking trail, newly renovated restrooms, playground, 2 pavilions, athletic field, community building. Hike, fish, play at the playground, and relax in the riverside pergola.

New York State Neversink Unique Area

The 6,580-acre Neversink Unique Area features a spectacular gorge and several waterfalls, Denton Falls, Mullet Brook Falls and High Falls. The Nature Conservancy designated the Neversink River as one of the 75 “Last Great Places” in the United States, Latin America and the Pacific.   • Katrina Falls Road Parking Lot (41.583177°N, 74.621980°W) Google Maps (9 miles from Village) Katrina Falls parking area is the most popular location to access Neversink River Unique Area. During holidays and weekends, this area fills quickly. Please park in designated areas only when visiting Neversink River Unique Area. We encourage visitors to access the Unique Area from one of the other parking areas instead when Katrina Falls area is full

Catskill Park

The Catskill Park in the Catskill Mountains of New York consists of 700,000 acres of land.  There are bobcats, minks and fishers in the preserve, and coyotes are often heard. There are some 400 black bears living in the region. The State operates numerous campgrounds and there are over 300 miles of multi-use trails. There are 35 peaks over 3,500 feet in elevation (Monticello’s elevation is 1600 feet) Slide Mountain is the highest at 4,180 ft.  Hunting is permitted, in season, in much of the park.
